A weekend of sound, light, music and art bringing local communities, regional and international artists together to explore the connection between coastal living and wellbeing.

What Does the Sea Say by Martyn Ware | all day, each day | LV21

Anyone can enter this seaside soundscape housed in a beach hut looking out on the Estuary. Visitors are encouraged to write down or record what the sea means to them either in a visitor book and on the beach hut itself, creating a bespoke public artwork for Gravesend. Free

Time to Sit and Stare | all day, each day | Benches aboard and surrounding LV21

Coastal path benches have been decorated by local artists Elspeth Penfold, Wendy Daws and Xtina Lamb, plus community groups Kent association for the Blind Gravesham Art Group and Gravesham Urban Knitters in response to the location and project. A sound and light event that brings the extraordinary ship LV21 and surroundings to life. Internationally acclaimed artist Ulf Pedersen’s work sees a large-scale projection on the barge sails of Edith May which will be reflected into the water.

Audiences are invited to explore LV21 below deck to discover:

An intimate gig of songs inspired by the Estuary and sea from BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winner Lucy Farrell. A new soundscape, States of Immersion by Kent artist Tania Holland Williams exploring our relationship with water. Plus, see how natural sounds can affect your mood with Exeter University’s Alex Smalley (Forest 404).

Your ticket allows you onboard LV21 for 30 minutes

Access onboard the ship is via steep staircases. Please wear flat, non-slip shoes.

Sea Song Walks with Lucy Farrell | 11am on Saturday 12th Oct and Sunday 13th Oct

Singing and walking are two things proven to be good for our wellbeing. We bring these together with groups meeting at LV21 to be led on a walk accompanied by songs of the sea sung by BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winner Lucy Farrell.

Artist Walks with Elspeth Penfold – Let’s take a Moment with Thread and Word | 3pm on Saturday 12th Oct and Sunday 13th Oct

Collaborate with Elspeth Penfold as you take a mindful walk together as a group. Your walk will include knotting of ropes, poetry, discussion and readings responding to the local area, the sea and the coastal path. Celebrating Sumak Kawsay, which is a Quechua (Bolivian Indian dialect) word for good living, or “buen vivir” in Spanish, we invite you bring along your own readings of the local area, sea, coastal path to contribute.

Having participated in workshops over several months, members of the local community have been challenged to create their own soundscape inspired by a journey along their favourite area of coast. Each piece is available to experience online.
