A few interesting facts about the alleyways in Gravesend’s High Street:

The alleyways in High Street, Gravesend, are older than Jury Street and Bank Street.

The alleys were the original means of moving from the High Street to Princes Street and Queen Street. Until 1846 there was no access between High Street and Princes Street, other than these narrow pedestrian alleyways.

A fire in 1845 provided the opportunity for the formation of Jury Street in 1846/7.

The name Jury Street commemorates the fact that a jury sat to assess the amount of damage and costs of the works.

Further down the street is Bank Street, which was formed in 1850 following another extensive fire and was named after the bank that stood on the corner.

The Hole in the Wall Public House was at the end of a narrow passageway named Hole in the Wall Alley. The pub door was in the alley and the pub was renamed Albion Ale Shades in 1910.

Today, alleyways remain an important historical and townscape feature of the Heritage Quarter, Gravesend.
