North west Kent is blessed as a key area for the British Palaeolithic. The Dartford/Swanscombe area in particular has many nationally important sites, such as Barnfield Pit the HS1 Ebbsfleet elephant, the Dartford Neanderthal site and the baker’s Hole Levallois site. dr Francis Wenban-Smith of the University of Southampton will review some of his work in this area, and current initiatives to identify areas of greater Palaeolithic potential here and across Kent more widely. Gravesend’s Cold War bunker is located within Woodlands park and was originally known as Civil Defence Region 6. The bunker was an underground command post, built in 1954, from which Gravesend’s rescue and emergency services were to be co-ordinated in the event of a nuclear attack.
