Estuary Festival - Who Am I?

26th June 2025

WHO AM I? Installation by Damilola Odusote

This new immersive installation charts the artist’s distinct upbringing growing up in the
Thames Estuary. Odusote explores the underlying issues that formed his identity as a
person of colour (born to Nigerian parents) raised in a culturally and economically
deprived port town in Essex by foster parents from a Romany heritage.
His touring installation will take a shape of the iconic super-sized 1990s BT phone
booth that served as a landmark meeting point, with drawings and audio inside,
recorded during workshops with Tilbury school children. The phone booth will serve as
a physical and metaphorical symbol of connecting to the past and emanate the sense
of childlike innocence and nostalgia that everything appears larger than life from a
child’s view.
